Jane Austen was an English novelist. Her books, set among the English middle and upper classes, have become famous for their wit, social observation and insights into the lives of early 19th-century women. Born on 16 December 1775, the seventh child and second daughter to well respected parents, Austen developed a love of writing from a young age. Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma were all published under a pseudonym. Her novels unveil her wit and dislike of romantic hysteria, a distinct perspective that has become notable in all of her works. She died on 18 July 1817 in Winchester, from what is believed to be Addison’s disease. Austen has become one of the most widely read writers in English literature, and many of her novels are considered literary classics, with their distinct humour and their ability to bridge the gap between romance and realism.
