The Third Wheel

Dexter has a complex about the fact that all his friends are getting married and moving in with their partners – but when aliens invade, it puts a lot of things into perspective.

Dexter feels like he’s being taunted by the universe. Everywhere he turns he’s accosted by wedding invitations and tables for two. All of his friends are settling down, while Dexter spends his evenings marking schoolbooks with his cat for company.

After another wedding ends in disaster, Dexter gets the shocking reminder that he’s not the centre of the universe. An alien spaceship has landed on the continent and when first contact is made, it’s anything but friendly...

Humanity’s numbers dwindle immediately, and the survivors are left to do exactly that – survive. Dexter gathers his friends and they all set off on a mission across the country, each with the goal of preserving their own lives in this new world.

Michael J Ritchie

Michael was born in the 80s (against his will) and has used fiction as a means to escape responsibility ever since. After getting a degree in Creative Writing, he accidentally stumbled into retail whereupon he fell up the career ladder a few times through no fault of his own. He’s also a blogger and occasional journalist. His first novel, The Atomic Blood-stained Bus, was published in 2014 and, shockingly, did not lead to instant fame and fortune. So he’s trying again.

He’d like to be known as a witty raconteur, but he’s a realist and knows that he’s actually seen as just a bit of a geek. He has the terrifying ability to sing sharp and flat at the same time, which is why he prefers to limit his creative output to the page.

How it works

The book will be delivered in 10 instalments (or staves), one every day. The instalments are delivered to your Pigeonhole bookshelf on your IOS or Android app, plus you can read on our web reader. You will receive an email letting you know when each stave is available.

We believe that shared reading leads to new ideas and connections. That’s why we have a dynamic commenting system which allows in-text discussion between our readers. Post a comment and all your fellow readers will be able to respond. You can also choose to receive notifications (customise them here) when someone responds to your comment, or, additionally, whenever a comment is left in the book.

As you read you will see round purple icons at the edge of certain paragraphs – tap on these to reveal behind-the-scenes extra content!

Links will be included at the end of the final stave which will allow you to leave reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. The full book will be available on your Pigeonhole bookshelf for one month for you to read at your leisure.
