Divide and Rule

Divide and Rule is a fantasy trilogy which traces the battle for the Queendom of Madrona. This riveting first book takes you into the matriarchal world of Madrona, and an unforgiving game of power, loyalty and betrayal.

Lieutenant Hannah Rogerson, a brilliant and talented Praetorian, is in charge of protecting ruling Queen Beatrice's husband, Lord Consort Guillaume. But Hannah’s orderly world veers to chaos when the Queen reveals a dark family secret and sets in motion a desperate plan to turn around her beleaguered reign.

An unwilling accomplice to the conspiracy, Hannah must somehow fulfil her duty to the Queen while she protects the Lord Consort – and the future of the Queendom of Madrona - from the consequences of old and new lies.

Why We Like It

  • It’s definitely a fantasy world, with a matriarchal society and touch of magic, but it almost doesn’t feel like one: this is above all a human story, grounded in the reality of love, loyalty and betrayal.
  • The strong (and wonderfully imperfect!) female characters.
  • The accompanying playlist, to match each chapter.
  • The first part of a trilogy!

Author

Kate Hart hails from the south of England, but ended up skipping over the channel to live and work in France from 2003. Kate began writing aged 9-and-three-quarters (as was carefully printed on the front cover of her first story) and hasn’t really ever stopped since. She flirted with short stories in her teens before settling on longer fiction, and now also posts weekly poetry and a black-humour blog on gender equality too.
Thora, Daughter Of came to life in 2011, when one night, during a vivid dream, the opening prologue was played out in front of her. Kate kept writing when the characters refused to leave her head, with the idea that she could one day read it to her bilingual daughter as a bedtime story.

Kate was born in 1980. She holds a BScEcons degree in European Union Studies from the University of Cardiff and an MSc in Poverty Reduction from SOAS. She still lives in France, with her two delightful Franco-British children, their equally charming goldfish, and many plants. When not writing, doing her day-job, or mothering her little people, Kate is passionate about running, gender stereotypes, and spending time with close friends… and the love of her life.
