Why We Like It

  • The politics and aesthetics of gender, sexuality, corruption and silence are a constant presence throughout this shortlist.
  • "These five remarkable narratives are proof that nowhere is the complexity and diversity of Africa and African lives more evident than in the stories we tell.” - Chair of judges, Dinaw Mengestu

"I believe that a literary prize for African writers will show the creative spirit of Africa and her humanity more globally."

Archbishop Desmond Tutu

"Over the years, the Caine Prize has done a great deal to foster writing in Africa and bring exciting new African writers to the attention of wider audiences."

JM Coetzee

How it works

The stories will be delivered in 5 instalments (or staves), one every other day. The instalments are delivered to your Pigeonhole bookshelf on your IOS or Android app, plus you can read on our web reader. You will receive an email letting you know when each stave is available.

We believe that shared reading leads to new ideas and connections. That’s why we have a dynamic commenting system which allows in-text discussion between our readers. Post a comment and all your fellow readers will be able to respond. You can also choose to receive notifications (customise them here) when someone responds to your comment, or, additionally, whenever a comment is left in the book.

After the serialisation the stories will be available on your bookshelf and you can read them at your leisure.
